Operation Long Drive

Overland expedition from UK to Australia (and beyound)

About Us

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”  – H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You.
We are taking Mr Brown's advice and going on a trip of a lifetime. Welcome to our website for Operation Long Drive.
My name is Me-An. My husband, Haydon and I are planning on driving from the UK to Australia.
You probably think we are crazy or that it can't be done. Rest assured, you are not alone. The exact same thoughts also occurred to our friends and family when they first heard about our trip.
The idea started when Haydon, and I were travelling around South East Asia and Australia in 2007. We were in Thailand and looking at the prices of 4x4 vehicles. We thought it would be a great idea to drive one of these vehicles back to Warwickshire. The idea was immediately laughed off by friends as being ridiculous.
Seven years have since passed, Haydon's swapped carpentry for soldiering and joined the Parachute Regiment, completing 3 tours of duty in Afghanistan and enjoyed mobility operations in the desert and mountainous regions of Helmand Province. I have embarked on a career as a Chartered Accountant. All this time, the idea of this trip has never left us.
We've finally stopped dreaming and started implementing the logistics of “Operation Long Drive”. We have recently got married and we are planning on driving our Land Rover Defender, Mary, tin cans in tow to start our honeymoon.
As well as being a trip of a lifetime, we are also doing this in aid of two charities which are close to our hearts -  Support Our Paras and  Anthony Nolan.
We will be using this website to document our whole journey from the UK to Australia, from the preparation to things we come across on the trips.
We hope you enjoy reading about our adventure. We hope you are inspired to explore, dream, discover.

Our Charities

Why we chose Support Our Para
As serving member of the parachute regiment, Haydon knows first hand the vital work the charity does for serving and former parachute regiment soldiers returning from the recent conflict in Afghanistan. Being one of the lesser know charities, we hope that this trip will raise awareness and bring in the much needed support for the charity.

Why we chose Anthony Nolan
For someone in need of a transplant, finding a match is crucial. The bigger the register, the better chance of finding a match. There are 37,000 people in the world waiting for stem cells, and 1,800 of them are in the UK. But even with 22 million people registered as potential donors around the world, we can’t find a suitable match for all of them. In the UK,  there are only just over half a million people willing to donate. Through our expedition, we hope to raise awareness of the important work Anthony Nolan does and encourage anyone who can to become a donor. Me-An is a registered donor.

Support Our Paras
Anthony Nolan
a charity which supports The Parachute Regiment through the welfare of serving soldiers and families and those affected by recent operations, and through the maintenance of its regimental efficiency, ethos, spirit and heritage.
a charity that saves the lives of people with blood cancer by matching remarkable people willing to donate their bone marrow (or stem cells) to patients in desperate need of a transplant. They also do vital research to make stem cell transplants as successful as possible.
